Summary
The American Philosophical Library houses over 60% of the surviving papers of its founder Benjamin Franklin, along with a large number of documents associated with Franklin, his family, and his intellectual circle. Distributed in a number of separate collections that reflect the complex history of custodial care, these materials form a remarkably coherent whole that document nearly every phase of Franklin's adult life and comprise one of the finest assemblages for study of scientific and civic culture in late colonial and early national America.
