Company scientist William Burton and a colleague, Robert Humphreys, patented the thermal cracking process that doubled the yield of gasoline from a barrel of crude oil, while also boosting its octane rating. The Burton-Humphreys process was credited with avoiding a gasoline shortage during World War I.
