Henry Shrapnel (1761-1842) developed the spherical case shot, better known as 'Shrapnel Shell', as well as other ordnance designs. His son, Henry Needham Scrope Shrapnel (1812-1896) served as a barrack master at Quebec in the 1860's. In later years, the Shrapnel Family made their home in Canada. Collection consists of correspondence, reports and drawings of Henry Shrapnel detailing the development of the shell which bears his name, as well as his other designs, 1781-1842; the correspondence of his son, Henry Needham Scrope Shrapnel 1846-1892; and the family records of the Shrapnel Family in Canada to 1917.
