Summary
James Franklin Barber (1875-1946) was a Toronto-based civil engineer. Barber was born in Milton, Ontario, the son of James Barber and Sarah Elizabeth (nee Harrison). He was educated at Mount Allison University and at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1906 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then studied Civil Engineering, was self- employed until 1909, when he formed a partnership with C.R. Young under the business name of Barber and Young. In 1911 he formed the firm of Barber, Wynn-Roberts and Seymour, which eventually became Frank Barber and Associates, Limited, with Barber as President. The firm was involved in government, municipal and industrial engineering work, particularly with bridge designs. As well, the firm acted as consultants for numerous townships and counties in Ontario, especially York Township and York County. Barber later became involved in investigating and reporting on patents, and in providing a consulting service for practising engineers. During World war Two Barber worked with Victory Air Craft, Limited, then joined the Toronto consulting engineering firm of Meadows, Critoph and Misener. Barber died in Toronto in 1946.
