The Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation is thrilled to feature music industry innovator Bob Pittman as the latest participant in Innovative Lives, an in-person dialogue that offers opportunities for audiences to engage in a public conversation with diverse inventors, innovators, and entrepreneurs about their pioneering work and careers.
Having started his media career as a radio announcer at age 15, Pittman played a leading role in creating MTV while still in his 20s and then had an illustrious career as CEO of MTV Networks, AOL Networks, Six Flags Theme Parks, Quantum Media, Century 21 Real Estate, and Time Warner Enterprises. Currently the Chairman and CEO of iHeartMedia, Pittman has continually revolutionized how music and media are recorded, transmitted, and enjoyed by billions of people worldwide.
Stephanie Ruhle, an anchor of MSNBC Live and co-anchor of NBC News’ Weekend TODAY, will interview Pittman and facilitate audience Q&A. A light reception and informal conversation will follow the program.
This is the inaugural program in the David H. Horowitz Music Innovation series, which examines musical creativity and innovation through a variety of formats, and is made possible by the Susan and David Horowitz Foundation’s endowment fund for Lemelson Center programs related to musical creativity and innovation.
Throughout his distinguished career, David H. Horowitz played a leading role encouraging innovation in the entertainment and media industries. After serving as general counsel of Screen Gems and then Columbia Pictures, he assumed the leadership of the cable and music division of Warner Communications as a member of its office of the president. In that capacity he supported the launch of a new cable channel, Music Television, better known as MTV, and later became its first CEO. He continued his support of innovation as an early-stage investor to the emerging Internet economy, and of music as publisher of Spin Magazine, as well as numerous ventures in his adopted home of Santa Fe. His passion for innovation was matched by his love and patronage of music; the David H. Horowitz Fund was created in his honor.
