As a public health precaution, the Smithsonian is postponing or canceling all public events, programming and gatherings through May 3. We appreciate your understanding.
The Lemelson Center is working to reschedule the April 1 program for a later date in 2020. If you have not done so already, please consider subscribing to the Lemelson Center newsletter to be the first to know about rescheduled and upcoming programs: americanhistory.si.edu….
At this time, all Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo are open during their regularly scheduled hours. We are closely monitoring the coronavirus situation. The health and safety of our visitors and staff are a top priority, and we are monitoring the guidance of local public health officials and the CDC. Please consult our calendar of events, museum websites and si.edu for the latest updates.
On Wednesday, April 1, join the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation for the next program in its award-winning Innovative Lives program series at the National Museum of American History. Innovative Lives: The Quickie Wheelchair features the chair’s inventor, Marilyn Hamilton.
After a hang gliding accident left her paralyzed, Marilyn Hamilton was determined to continue her active, athletic lifestyle. Her heavy wheelchair hampered that ambition. Drawing inspiration from the materials used in hang gliders, she worked with two friends to create a lightweight and highly maneuverable wheelchair. She started the Quickie wheelchair company in 1979—and went on to become a two-time US Open women’s wheelchair tennis champion.
The National Museum of American History welcomes visitors of all ages and abilities. American Sign language interpretation will be provided. For all other accessibility services, including real-time captioning (CART), please email nmahprograms@si.edu, or call 202-633-3150. Two weeks’ notice is preferred.
