Summary

Records of the Legal Dept. include copies of the Du Pont Company's original partnership agreements between E.I. du Pont and Peter Bauduy (1801). There are also copies of the 1899 dissolution agreement and the 1902 incorporation correspondence. Also included are syndicate agreements between T. Coleman, Pierre, and Alfred I. du Pont which document the founding of the modern Du Pont Company. General files include records of the libel suit brought against Ferdinand Lundberg over the publication of AMERICA'S SIXTY FAMILIES (1937-1940), and a Federal Trade Commission investigation of rayon (1936). There are also records of a numbeer of minor lawsuits for personal injuries, and or air and water pollution at the Hopewell, Va., plant. Records of the Patent and Trademarks Divisions include extensive documentation of the cellophane trademark suits (1932-1941) covering the development of cellophane, a 1932 suit of Du Pont vs. The Glidden Company over paints, and the suit of Robert Schupphaus vs. Du Pont involving the dispute between Schupphaus and Hudson Maxim over Stabillite. Also included are records of lawsuits filed by German companies after World War I over patent confiscation by the Alien Property Custodian. A group of miscellaneous material (Accession 1729) includes stockholder files on the General Motors antitrust suit and divestiture (1957-1971), and minutes of the Patent Board (1919-1955). There are also administrative papers (charters, bylaws, etc.) for a number of subsidiary and absorbed companies.
