Summary

John R. Whinnery is well known for his innovative work in microwaves and optoelectronics. His interview discusses his collabortation with Simon Ramo; service on governmental, scientific, and industry boards; and the NASA apollo program, among other topics. Whinnery discusses his family background and early education at the University of California, Berkeley; his early career at General Electric; his return to Berkeley as a graduate student, lecturer, and associate professor; his years as Dean of the College of Engineering; and his service to governmental and scientific agencies.
