Summary
Sam S. Brody was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on April 8, 1929. He attended the University of Chattanooga and received his graduate degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 1956. Upon graduation he went to work as a chemist at E. I. Du Pont. In 1963 he was hired on at Melpar/Meloy Laboratories as a senior chemist and later became Manager of their program for Instrumentation Development & Applied Research. He spent eight years at Melpar/Meloy, during which time he co-invented the phosphorus and sulfur selective flame photometric detector. In the latter portion of his career he worked for Analytical Instrument Development Company (AID), Roy F. Weston, Inc., Taylor Instrument Company and Eastman Kodak Company. He also did several stints as an independent consultant. Sam S. Brody retired as a consultant in 2000. These papers concern only one phase of a long career but they are a cohesive group telling the story of Brody’s years at Melpar/Meloy Laboratories. There are reference files used by Brody in the various projects he supervised, copies of papers delivered by Brody at conferences and symposia and patent-related materials--most of the latter concern the flame photometric detector. Brody and coworkers’ pre-prototype version of a chromatograph inlet system developed for use by the Army to test dispersion of chemical agents in the air is included in this donation and there is accompanying documentation in the form of a draft version of the instrumentation manual for this inlet system and associated gas Chromatograph.
