Summary

Organization formed in 1958 to encourage the study of the development of technology and its relations with society and culture, incorporated in Ohio as a nonprofit educational organization. The Society is interdisciplinary, concerned with the history of technological devices and processes and with the relations of technology to politics, economics, labor, business, the environment, public policy, science, and the arts. "Technology and Culture," the official publication of the Society, is included with membership. Membership is international, open to individuals, organizations, corporations, and institutions interested in the purposes and activities of the Society. The Society holds annual meetings, sometimes with related organizations. Business records relating to SHOT from its inception in 1958 to 1989. Most are Melvin Kranzberg's papers, generated in his various roles as an officer of SHOT, but there are also papers of other officers. These records are grouped into subseries on the basis of the functioning of the professional organization of scholars interested in the history of technology. Examples include: Organization period, 1956-1984; Committees, 1959-1989; Correspondence, 1963-1988; Financial records, 1959-1984; Meetings, 1958-1987; Membership, 1958-1984; Newsletters, 1958-1989; Publication of Monographs, 1961-1984; and SHOT Professional Affiliations, 1964-1988. Records of SHOT's journal, "Technology and Culture" 1958-1987; largely those generated by Kranzberg as editor-in-chief of T & C, 1959-1981, arranged into subseries according to editorial and other activities involved in producing the publication. In addition to the conceptual period and first printing in 1958-1962, the subseries includes book reviews, editorial review of articles, indexes and tables of contents, printing (by the University of Chicago Press), costs, promotions, and special projects.
