Summary
Eugene du Pont (1840-1902) was educated at the University of Pennsylvania. Upon the completion of his education in 1864 he became a junior partner at E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. In 1889 he became president of the Du Pont Company. He held this position until 1902. After his death T. Coleman, Pierre and Alfred I. du Pont took control of the company and transformed it into a modern corporation. Papers relating to Du Pont Company affairs describe improvements in black powder manufacturing operations and technical innovations. There is also some correspondence relating to the Gunpowder Trade Association. Letters from Henry Belin, Jr. document the operation of the Du Pont powder agency in Scranton, Pa. Reports from Pinkerton's National Detective Agency contain reports by undercover agents who infiltrated a secret society of powder workers in 1891 that was protesting the fact that the Du Pont Company had begun to contract out some craft jobs. These reports document episodes of barnburning and other worker protest. Other papers of Eugene du Pont include family records, estate papers and papers relating to personal investments. The latter include the South Side and Brooklyn Street Railway Companies in Cleveland, Ohio, property in Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa, and railroad securities. Papers of Eugene du Pont, Jr.,
