Summary
In the opening years of the nineteenth century, Grout and Company, a silk manufacturing company, was established in Norwich England by the brothers George and Joseph Grout, the inventors of "Norwich crape". About 1814, the Yarmouth factory was established. At various times, the Company held other factories throughout England as well as a reeling establishment near Calcutta, India. Following a financial crisis in 1890, the Company was concentrated at Yarmouth and other factories were closed. A Limited Company was formed and a subsidiary established at St. Catharines, Ontario in 1923. The firm expanded with the acquisition of Valleyfield Silk Mills Limited at Valleyfield, Quebec, in 1933. Manufacturing ended in 1955.
Fonds consists of minutes, balance sheets, audited accounts, correspondence, annual and other reports, and photographs of the subsidiaries of Grout's Ltd., at St. Catharines, Ontario and at Valleyfield, Quebec. These records were selected for microfilming from the larger, parent company, Grout and Company, because of their Canadian content and consist of volumes 248 to 377. This material is located on microfilm reels A-1948 to A-1958.
